We would have to go back in time, possibly too hard to find some source of authority. The notion of authority has been treated in philosophy and sociology, particularly Max Weber and Alexandre Kojève. Survival needs, forced men to establish rules that would allow them to face the dangers and mishaps of a hostile environment like other men and nature.
