*Neo-Tribal Dubs for Dancers & Djs A dark, mysterious journey into an imaginary Orient, where the saz and the sequencer, the darbukka and the drum loop, are woven into an electric & acoustic mosaic of past and future. Dakini asked its favorite artists to create tracks for use by the innovative, open-minded bellydancers of the Neo-Tribal underground. Dakini regular Makyo sets the tone by creating an electronic, echoing take on a raks sharki rhythm, with a flowing saz melody on top, a slow tempo perfect for sword dances. Kazakhstan-born Irina, vocalist of Aguila, harkens back to Natacha Atlas' classic "Dub Yalil" with a soaring, melismatic vocal over a phat dub groove. Lumin fuse tabla, oud, ney, synth pads, and breaks for a moody piece in an irresistible 7-beat rhythm. Tokyo track-maker Taichi Masuda drops some techno-tribal percussive pieces full of soundtrack sampling that any dancer will want to work with. Orb-collaborator Greg Hunter mixes qanun and layered chants over deep bass like some kind of fallahi Mad Professor. Freeman provide a harder-edged breaks piece with floor-shaking low for all you Rachel Brice fans, while Badawi runs his riqs and dumbeks and oud through a battery of filters and delays, producing an epic piece of hypno-dub for whirling.
